Make Like a Tree is a quintessention of travels expressed in music and photography created by Sergey Onischenko - vagabond from Ukraine who is touring a round the world and spreading his indie-folk tunes with a touch of non-conformism and Beat Generation ideas and exhibiting his minimalistic landscape photography taken in omnifarious places during his journeys.
Each concert is played with new members and all songs are created and recorded in different parts of the world. Experiments with sounds and collaborations with audience can turn one-man-band in a duo or in quite a large improvising ensemble.
“Mothernight” is a third album created by Make Like a Tree. It's a 10 track indie-ambient folk album that is a quintessention of 3 year world journey around the world. Every song is a collaboration with a new artist who Sergey has met and involved into Make Like a Tree project during his wanderings around Japan, Kenya, Tanzania, Russia, Ukraine, Austria, Italy, Norway, Catalonia, Armenia. The name of the album is inspired by the eponymous novel of Kurt Vonnegut that describes a perfect example of “citizen of nowhere”. The name refers to the idea that modern society is lost in the middle of the night without any directions to the place where we came from. Night scrapps all the shells and ripping off masks that accrue to our faces makes us look more real . "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."
Album has been self recorded in a portable home studios in Japan on the suburbs of Tokyo and on beautiful island of Zanzibar polished by the ocean breeze and heavy sunlight of Tanzania. Mastering is done by Thomas Meidell in Metropolis Studios in Oslo, Norway. Cover is done by the japaneese painter Youji Otsuki.
This album unites many nations and makes the borders vanish facing the power of music.
from joe:
I met Sergey in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in May of 2018. I was staying in a small AirBnB down the street from a bar with free shows most nights, and my partner and I happened to wander over for a drink the night Sergey was playing. His live show was awe-inspiring. Building a stage show of twinkling star lights, strung photography, ambient noise, and interesting instruments, he captivated an audience of mostly-Slovenian bar-goers (and us).
When I asked Sergey if he’d like to participate in T&TT, he said of course - but he was releasing a new album and wouldn’t have time to put together anything for a split tape. However, the album was being released on CD in Europe and digitally in Asia, but no one was making any tapes - and thus the T&TT Full Album series was born. Sergey’s music is as beautiful as his soul, and he spends at least 7 months a year touring throughout Europe. You should make it to one of his shows. Really, do it.

short songs that feel unrestrained, raw and yet laser-focussed. there's no sing-alongs, breakdowns, pile-on moments or anthems but there's tonnes of energy and force. if words like "jagged, angular, noisy, post-punk blah blah etc" turn you on then this is for you. RockAndEyeroll
